Why Is The Electrification of Transportation Critical?
Globally, 25% of all CO2 emissions come from the transportation sector because this sector relies heavily on fossil energy. Transportation includes personal cars, heavy transport, and public transit.
Light-duty vehicles (personal cars and small trucks) are responsible for more than half of the emissions. But they are also the best candidates for electrification. But to reach net zero emissions by 2050, electricity must come from clean sources, which is why solar energy will be an essential contributor.

6.9 million EVs (electric vehicles) have been sold globally in 2021, which is a 107% increase compared to 2020. Electric cars have more and more market shares because they have many advantages:
- Better for local air quality
- Including the manufacturing process, EV cars are cleaner than thermic cars
- They can be charged anywhere (at home, work, etc.)
According to Solar Power Europe, a 5-kW solar panel rooftop installation can produce the energy needed daily for an electric vehicle. As solar has become one of the cheapest energies worldwide, it is becoming competitive compared to oil for mobility.
Trending Solar Applications: Carports
Solar carports are structures that cover parking areas with solar panels on top. They can be installed in a small house driveway or in big commercial parking lots. They are becoming more and more popular to charge electric vehicles. For example, France just passed a bill that requires all large parking lots to be covered by carports.
Solar carports can have many benefits:
– Protection of cars from sunrays, rain, snow, etc.
– Commercial advantages for businesses that have carports for their customers
– Production of electricity to charge EVs
– Reduced energy uses for the owner
The global lack of recharge points is one of the biggest challenges in the development of EVs. That’s why solar carports are essential for the electrification of transportation and mobility.
