Overview of Nigeria’s Electricity
The electric generation, transmission, and distribution in Nigeria don’t meet the needs of residential and industrial consumers. In 2020, around 55 percent of Nigerian people had access to electricity. 80% of power generation in Nigeria comes from gas, and most of the rest comes from oil. Regarding electric production, natural gas is the main source.

Solar Energy Development in Nigeria
Following the Paris Agreement, Nigeria has shown big ambition for the decarbonization of its economy. They updated their “nationally determined contributions” which are the efforts every Party of the Paris Agreement has to put forward. Their objectives are consistent with 1.5 degrees of temperature increase.
Nigeria is now taking more and more benefits from its large solar resources. In addition to climate, this also benefits many communities that can easily access electricity. Electricity access improves their well-being, health, education, and wealth.

Nigeria plans to generate 30% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. Nigerian Federal Government is financing many projects for the electrification of rural communities, through mini-grids and residential off-grid installations. Regarding the residential segment, the Government has announced a $619 million commitment that will enable 5 million households to get access to electricity thanks to solar energy.
Thanks to this new partnership, EGE solar panels will now participate in the electrification and decarbonization of Nigeria. We can’t wait to see the projects done by our distributor in Nigeria.
